Monthly Jamborees

performers on-stage at a monthly SCVFA jam

Monthly jams are held on the first Sunday of each month from 1 PM to 5 PM at the Hoover Middle School multi-purpose room. Adult admission is $5.00 for both members and non-members. Children 16 and under are free.

Hoover Middle School is located at:

  1635 Park Ave.
  San Jose, CA 95126

The school is at the corner of Naglee and Park. (The school's front entrance is on Park, but the closest parking is on the Naglee side of the campus.)

The jam is family event, with players often ranging in age from less than 10 to over 80. Informal groups form outdoors and begin jamming around 1pm, and play a variety of styles. These usually include old-time, bluegrass, gospel, Celtic, country and folk. Inside there are continuous performances on stage that start at about 1:30pm, with chairs and tables set up for people to sit and enjoy the music.

Anyone is welcome to sign up to play on stage, as a solo performer or with a group. Each performer or group typically plays for 10 to 15 minutes. It's a great opportunity for performers to gain experience performing on stage. (Occasionally special events, such as our Youth Fiddle Contest in November and our occasional concerts, preempt the on-stage performances.)

Starting with the October 2005 jam, we will offer a slow-play SCVFA Beginners' Circle starting around 2:00pm. Bring your acoustic instrument and practice playing with a group, learn some new tunes, and pick up tips on jamming. See the Beginners' Page for more information and some tunes.

There are often items for sale at the jams such as CDs, tapes, instruments, SCVFA T-shirts and bumper stickers and light snacks. The jam concludes with a door prize drawing shortly before 5:00 pm.

Alcohol and smoking are not permitted on the school grounds or in the buidings.
