Music Jam and Open Mike at Hoover School, plus a KidFiddle workshop

Join us at the April jam at Hoover School for music indoors and out. Our usual format: multiple jam groups from 1-5, open-mike performances on stage in the Hoover multi-purpose room starting around 1:30 and the two learning groups: the Slow Jam group starting at about 1:30, and the Tune Builder group starting at about 2:00, each for an hour or so.

Erik Hoffman Also from 2 to 3 pm we will offer a KidFiddle workshop, led by multi-instrumentalist (and contra-dance caller) Erik Hoffman. Erik teaches fiddle and other instruments, for example in multi-week class series at the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, and has worked with the children at Walker Creek Music Camp. Erik led a popular SCVFA KidFiddle workshop in March of 2016.

KidFiddle workshops are intended for advanced-beginner to intermediate fiddlers, 17 and under. Tuition is only $5, and youth admission to the jam is free as always. You can sign up at the event, but we’d appreciate hearing from you in advance (at kidfiddle /at/ fiddlers.org) if you know a young fiddler who would like to participate.

After the KidFiddle workshop we’ll ask the students to perform on stage with Erik. If we’re lucky, after that Erik may play a few tunes for us too!

We have a special treat in store for the June jam: Jazz and Swing violinist Paul Anastasio will lead an improvisation workshop from 2:00 to 3:00, and then will perform a mini-concert at about 3:30, accompanied in both events by versitile swing guitarist Tony Marcus.

The workshop is aimed at intermediate to advanced players of all ages. (The focus is on fiddle, but players of other instruments are welcome to participate.) Workshop tuition is only $10 extra with jam admission, and there's no additional charge for the mini-concert. We expect that workshop to be popular, as was the workshop he led for us in 2009. Here is the event flyer (PDF).

Paul, a professional jazz, swing, and western swing violinist, played with music legends Merle Haggard, Larry Gatlin, and Loretta Lynn. He is a respected authority on Joe Venuti, the father of jazz violin, and teaches throughout the U.S. You can see and hear an example of Paul's playing here.

Tony is among the Bay Area’s most versatile and respected multi-instrumentalists. He has recorded with Leftover Dreams, the Cats & Jammers, and many others.

Free Music Jam at the Rose Garden Park

The July jam will be held in the Rose Garden Park on Naglee Ave. at Garden Dr. (adjacent to San José Municipal Rose Garden). The park is just two blocks from our usual Hoover Middle School location. Free admission. (Note: We will not have our usual open-mike performances at this jam.)

If you'd like to participate in a Slow Jam or Tune Builder Circle, please ask. For jams in the park we generally arrange them only on demand.

Bring a picnic if you like (barbeques are available in the park), and come to jam or just to listen. Come early and help us by reserving a table!
