Music Jam and Open Mike at Hoover School, plus our Holiday Potluck

The SCVFA will hold its annual Holiday Potluck at the December 7 Jam. This is a great chance to meet some of the other member families. We will jam as usual from 1:00 until 3:00 or so (with the Beginners' Circle from around 2 to 3), and then start serving the meal.

Reduced Admission Charge:  The December 2014 jam+potluck admission charge will be reduced to $5, for members and non-members alike. Happy holidays!

The Fiddlers Association will provide two main meat dishes (ham and turkey), beverages and tableware. We ask that people who would like to participate bring a side dish (or dessert) to share, sized to serve 4 times the number in their group. (For example a couple should bring a dish that will serve 8 people.) If you want to participate but can't bring a dish, you can purchase a meal for a nominal fee.

Music Jam and Open Mike at Hoover School and a Concert -- and a Special Event

Join us at the March jam at Hoover School for music indoors and out. Our usual format: multiple jam groups from 1-5, open-mike performances on stage in the Hoover multi-purpose room starting around 1:30 and the Beginners’ Circle slow jam from 2-3.

Blaine Sprouse photo At about 3:00 we'll have a concert by well-known bluegrass fiddler Blaine Sprouse.  A West Virginia native, Blaine has performed and recorded with first-generation bluegrass artists Bill Monroe, Jimmy Martin, The Osborne Brothers and Jim and Jesse, and legendary country artist Charlie Louvin of the Louvin Brothers. He has also recorded and performed with a number of contemporary bluegrass groups, as well as his own ensembles and solo performances. Come hear some great bluegrass!

Blaine will also teach an hour-long workshop before the concert, aimed at intermediate-level and above adults. He plans to explore traditional bluegrass fiddling as well as some great old-timey traditional Appalachian Mountain tunes, working on such aspects as improving tone, driving a fiddle rhythmically, and backup techniques in the context of a bluegrass band.

For this event, adult jam+concert admission will be $15 (payable at the door).  (Adult jam admission will include admission to the concert as well.  Admission to the jam and concert will be free for children 17 and under, as for most SCVFA events.)  For those who want to attend the workshop, a limited number of combination tickets for the jam, concert and workshop will also be available, for an additional charge.  Times and other details subject to change; stay tuned.
