Music Jam and Open Mike at Hoover School and a Featured Performer

Join us at the October jam at Hoover School for music indoors and out. Our usual format: multiple jam groups from 1-5, open-mike performances on stage in the Hoover multi-purpose room starting around 1:30 and the Beginners’ Circle slow jam from 2-3.

The October 5 jam will be truly historic. Our Featured Performer is actually a reunion of two bands organized by Jack Sadler: The Overlook Mountain Boys (shown here in a 1970s-era photo) and Lone Prairie. Jack is a co-founder of the California Bluegrass Association (CBA) and a charter member of the SCVFA. Plans are still being firmed up, but we expect the Overlook Mountain Boys will perform starting at about 3:00, with Lone Prairie following at about 3:30.

It sounds like it’ll be a great reunion. Jack says so far he's heard from these former members who plan to participate:
Overlook Mountain Boys:  Art Kee (bass), John Lytle (vocals, guitar), Jack Sadler (vocals, fiddle), Jack Tuttle (fiddle), Ron White (vocals, Dobro).
Lone Prairie:  Rob Horgan (banjo), Art Kee (fiddle), Paul King (vocals, guitar), Jim Mintun (vocals, Dobro), Louise Mintun (vocals, bass), Jack Sadler (vocals, fiddle).

Calling all young fiddlers! Mark your calendars for the 2014 SCVFA Youth Fiddle Contest — our 13th! The contest will be held on Sunday, November 2 at the SCVFA monthly jam.

Send in your registration early! Registration is limited to the first 25 applicants, and the early-registration discount ends Wednesday October 30, 2013. Get the details and download registration information on our Contest Page. (See the upper right corner for downloadable PDFs.)

Even if you're not a young fiddler, come to cheer the contestants on. It's great fun! Adult admission to the jam and contest is $6 for SCVFA members, $8 for non-members. One Adult Pass is included in each contestant's registration packet. Children to 17 years old are admitted free.

Jamming outside as usual during the contest — but no open mike this month.

Music Jam and Open Mike at Hoover School, plus our Holiday Potluck

We expect to hold our annual Holiday Potluck at the December 7 Jam. This is a great chance to meet some of the other member families. We usually jam from 1:00 until 3:00 or so (with the Beginners' Circle from around 2 to 3), and then start serving the meal.

Check back as the date approaches for more details.  If you can help, please contact President Richard Brooks, at president /at/ scvfa.org
