Free Music Jam at the Rose Garden Park

The August jam will be held in the Rose Garden Park on Naglee Ave. at Garden Dr. (adjacent to San José Municipal Rose Garden). The park is just two blocks from our usual Hoover Middle School location. Free admission. (Note: We will not have our usual open-mike performances at this jam.)

If you'd like to participate in a Slow Jam or Tune Builder Circle, please ask. For jams in the park we generally arrange them only on demand.

Bring a picnic if you like (barbeques are available in the park), and come to jam or just to listen. Come early and help us by reserving a table!

Music Jam and Open Mike at Hoover School and a Featured Performer

Join us at the October jam at Hoover School for music indoors and out. Our usual format: multiple jam groups from 1-5, open-mike performances on stage in the Hoover multi-purpose room starting around 1:30 and the learning groups (Slow Jam and Tune Builder Circle) from 2-3.

Anders Holtsberg and Jeanne Sawyer playing together At about 3:00 we'll have a performance by our Featured Performers, Anders Holtsberg and Jeanne Sawyer. Anders and Jeanne play folk music from Scandinavia in the traditional style of two fiddles played in close harmony. They will present tunes, old and newer, that represent the dance styles from different parts of Sweden with perhaps a little excursion into Norway and Finland.

Anders grew up playing fiddle near Stockholm, lived for many years in Skåne, and now lives in the Bay area. His big teenage rebellion was to play folk music instead of classical! Jeanne started dancing when she was in high school, and jumped into playing Scandinavian music in the early ’90s. She is president of the Northern California Spelmanslag (fiddlers club) and leads many fiddlers’ gatherings and dance parties. Both are singers as well, so the performance will likely include some singing. View or download the event flyer (PDF).

As usual for Featured Performers at SCVFA, there is no extra admission charge for this event beyond our usual jam admission fees. We hope you can join us.
